Support for seniors wishing to age in place in their own homes

The Athens Village is not a place, but a concept. It is a membership organization founded by local residents in 2009 to give Athens Countians age 60+ the confidence and practical support to live their lives securely and independently in their own homes, among friends and familiar places. The Athens Village is organized and managed by its members. Members serve on the Board of Trustees and action teams, volunteer for each other, and shape the future direction of programs and services.

Benefits of Membership

  • Personal help any hour of the day or night.

  • Free annual home safety assessment and referrals to vetted service providers for home repairs, often at a discount.

  • Guaranteed direct access to skilled nursing care, physical therapy and homemaking assistance at reduced rates through Appalachian Community Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice & Health Services, Inc.

  • Volunteer help from other members for transportation to such places as the grocery store or doctor’s office, or for running errands for you. Opportunities exist for you to volunteer to help other members as you are willing and able.

  • Technical assistance from other member volunteers to help with your computer, cell phone, or other equipment.

  • News of the group and its members through a monthly newsletter, website, and e-mail notices sent by the Director, who will also answer any questions you have.

  • Group advocacy on issues of importance to senior citizens.

  • Monthly brown-bag lunches serve as both social gatherings and opportunities to hear and question speakers on such issues as driving, health, legal issues, investments, exercise, etc.

  • Smaller “coffees” on specialized topics such as transportation, decluttering, and opera, to name a few.

  • A telephone “buddy system” and emergency phone tree, which is implemented during flood, snow, or other community emergency for assurance that you are all right.
