Emergency Response System - Response Ability™
Appalachian Community Health Services (ACHS) is a provider for the Response Ability™ personal emergency response system. This service allows individuals who live alone to summon help with the press of a button. Recently added features include a heat sensor that activates an alarm if the temperature inside the client's home goes below 50 degrees or above 100 degrees. In addition, ERS units now are equipped to perform a self-test every 24 hours. This assures the unit is working properly. However, it is still important that the client or a family member test the unit each month.
Another new feature is Call Check In. This requires the patient to press the alarm button twice a day (perhaps upon rising and before going to bed at night) to let the monitoring center know the client is all right. If the client does not press the button at the established times, the monitoring center will activate an alarm in the home for five minutes. If no response is received, the monitoring center assumes an emergency exists and calls responders and emergency personnel.
ERS is available on a rental basis.
How the Emergency Response System (ERS) Works
- You wear a small, waterproofpendant around the neck or on the wrist.
- The ERS base unit is connected to the phone and to an electrical outlet.
- Pressing the button on the pendant activates the ERS unit and a signal is sent to the response center.
- When the alarm is received by the response center, an attempt is made to establish voice contact with you. Pre-determined responders and/or emergency services are alerted.
